Designed by the architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu, the museum building was constructed in 1925-1926 and opened to visitors in 1930. Atatürk's body rested temporarily in a mausoleum area in the museum's entrance hall between 1938 and 1953, before being moved to Anıtkabir. Its galleries display woodwork, tiles and porcelain, carpets and kilims, and a reconstructed Ankara house, with objects from the Beylik, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
