The İşhan Monastery in İşhan village, Yusufeli district, consists of a church and a chapel. According to a manuscript dated 951, construction began in 955 under the Georgian King David and was completed in 1027 by the Bagratid king Magistros; the monastery served as an episcopal seat until the 16th century. In the Ottoman period its west-facing section was converted into a mosque and remained in use for worship until 1983, which helped keep the building standing.
