Founded in the 8th century BC, Kyzikos was an important port city with the Temple of Hadrian, one of Anatolia's largest Roman-era temples, a theatre, an amphitheatre and a necropolis. The city declined after a major earthquake in the 6th century. Finds from the excavations are displayed in the Bandırma Museum.
