Meriç lies in the west of Edirne province, bordered on the west and north by 56 kilometres of the Greek frontier, with the Meriç and Ergene rivers marking its edges. Founded after the Balkan Wars under the name Kavaklı, it took its current name, Meriç, in 1935; besides growing rice, wheat and sugar beet, it is known for traditional basket-weaving.
