Karaçoban is a district in south-eastern Erzurum, built on an alluvial plain formed by the Hınıs Stream. Its recorded history goes back to around 1400 BC; it came under Turkish rule after the 1071 Battle of Manzikert, gained municipal status in 1965 and district status in 1987, formed by merging the villages of Karaçoban, Gövendik and Sarıveli.
