Şenkaya is a district roughly 185 km north-east of the provincial centre, at the point where the Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia regions meet. Part of Georgia's Tao region in the Middle Ages, it came under Ottoman rule in the 16th century; today's district was formed in 1946 by merging the sub-districts of Kamhis, Kosor and Bardız.
