Karkamış

Karkamış is a district on the Euphrates, on the border with Syria. The Karkamış archaeological site and park, one of the most important centres of the Late Hittite period, lies within the district just north of the border, and it is also known for pistachio and olive growing and a protected area for Euphrates turtles.
