Şebinkarahisar, in inland Giresun, is built over the ancient city of Koloneia at an elevation of 1,371 m; it was governed as an independent province between 1923 and 1933. Şebinkarahisar Castle, the Virgin Mary Monastery and the Behramşah Mosque are its historical highlights.
