Süleymaniye Quarter, southwest of today's city centre and 4 km from it, grew on silver mining and was known as Canca between 1520 and 1566 and afterwards as Gümüşhane. After mining ended in the early 20th century and the population left, historic structures such as the Hagios Stephanos Church, the Süleymaniye Mosque, a bathhouse, a bridge and a fountain survived.
