Begun in 1853 for Sultan Abdülmecid by the architect Nigoğos Balyan and completed soon after, the mosque, with its large windows and pink-mosaic dome, lets Bosphorus light flood its interior. Standing on the Ortaköy waterfront right beside the foot of the bridge, it is one of the most photographed mosques in the city.
