The area, once home to Byzantine military depots, became the garden of Topkapı Palace after the conquest. Because the Tanzimat reform edict was read out here in 1839, it is also known as the "Gülhane Hattı Hümayunu". Laid out and opened to the public in 1912, it is now the largest park on the European side of the city and contains the first statue of Atatürk erected in Turkey.
