Kartal is a district on İstanbul's Asian side along the Marmara Sea, bordered by Maltepe, Sancaktepe, Sultanbeyli and Pendik. İstanbul's highest point, Aydos Hill, and the viewpoint at Yakacık Hill, known as "İstanbul's Balcony," both lie within the district, which was known in the 6th century as the fishing village of Kartalimen.
