Buca lies on the southern slopes of Mount Nif and is İzmir's most populous district. It is home to the Tınaztepe campus of Dokuz Eylül University. Levantine-era mansions, old Greek houses, the 1872 railway station and Roman-era aqueducts over the Meles stream carry the district's historical traces.
