Başyayla lies at the foot of the Taurus Mountains in Karaman, at an elevation of 1,300–1,600 m. It became a district, separating from Ermenek, in 1990; its population is largely made up of Avşar Turks. Certified Napoleon cherries and Starking and Golden apple growing, along with beekeeping, form the basis of the district's economy.
