About 15 km from the centre of Yeşilhisar, the Soğanlı Valley became one of the centres of Christianity in the region from the 4th century onward. Around fifty rock churches survive in the valley, eight of which are open to visitors; the Karabaş, Kubbeli and Tahtalı (St Barbara) churches are known for their frescoes. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cappadocia since 1985.
