Akşehir is known as the place where Nasreddin Hoca, the famous folk-tale hero, died in 1284 and was buried; his tomb is in the town centre. Lake Akşehir on its shore is favoured for birdwatching and sunset walks, and the building used as the Western Front headquarters during the War of Independence is now a museum.
