Manisa Castle, on the northern slope of Mount Spil (Manisa Dağı) just south of the city centre, has an inner and an outer section. A fortress already stood on this hill, the ancient acropolis of the city, in the Hellenistic period; the present inner castle was built in 1222 under the Byzantine emperor John III Vatatzes, and its walls were reinforced in the early 14th century. The Saruhan beylik repaired and used the castle, and it continued to be maintained under the Ottomans.
