Mazıdağı, formerly known as Şamrah, lies 47 km north-west of Mardin. The Awrihan caves, Dermetinan Castle and the Tomb of Sultan Şeyhmus are among its historic sites, and the phosphate deposits north-west of the district centre supply most of Turkey's production.
