Ancient Kanytella, known today as Kanlıdivane, lies within the Rough Cilicia region about 13 km west of Erdemli. The settlement grew around the Kanlıdivane sinkhole, a large collapsed cavity at its centre. Occupation continued without interruption from the Hellenistic period (3rd century BC) to late antiquity (7th century AD), and the remains include churches, tower tombs and a necropolis.
