Its foundations thought to date to the Hellenistic or Early Roman period, Silifke Castle has taken on the appearance of a Medieval castle through later repairs and changes. Built on a hill 185 metres high overlooking Silifke and surrounded by a dry moat, the oval castle contains vaulted galleries, cisterns and storage remains. The 17th-century traveller Evliya Çelebi recorded 23 towers, a mosque and 60 houses inside; 10 towers survive today.
