Hozat is one of Tunceli's mountainous districts, which gained district status under the 1935 Tunceli Law. A shrine attributed to the Bektashi dervish Sarı Saltuk stands in the district, and the climate ranges from 1-2 metres of snow in winter to hot, dry summers.
