Çan, in the centre of Çanakkale province, was known in antiquity as Gergithes. About 58% of the district is forested; Mount Ağı (983 m) and the Kocabaş stream shape its geography. Ceramic factories and the lignite-fired Çan 18 Mart Thermal Power Plant are important to the district's economy.
