Sources record that the mosque was first built in 1231-1232 by the emir Celaleddin Ali and took its present form in 1274 under Emineddin Mikail, a disciple of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi. It has four entrances, and its roof is carried on 67 wooden columns of juniper and Scots pine, some of whose capitals reuse Byzantine marble fragments. An opening in the centre of the roof lets in light from above.
