The royal garden between the Küçüksu and Göksu streams was long used by the Ottoman sultans as a summer retreat. In 1857 Sultan Abdülmecid replaced an earlier wooden pavilion with the present masonry building. Reflecting the plan of a traditional Turkish house, the pavilion has been open to visitors as a museum-palace since 1996.
