Ümraniye, on İstanbul's Asian side, is bordered by Üsküdar, Ataşehir, Sancaktepe, Çekmeköy and Beykoz and has no coastline. Annexed by Orhan Gazi during the Ottoman period, the area became a municipality in 1963 and a district in 1987; today textiles, spare parts and wood-product manufacturing are its main economic activities.
