The SEKA paper factory, whose foundations were laid in 1934 and which produced Turkey's first domestic paper in 1936, was closed in 2004. The land was transferred to Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality and turned into a waterfront city park on the Gulf of İzmit, with a paper and city museum, a pier, exhibition areas and walking paths.
