The pentagon-planned city walls of ancient Malatya (Melitene), dating from the Roman period.

Construction of the Old Malatya city walls began in the Roman period with the building of the camp of the XII Legion in the city, and was completed under Constans I and Justinian. According to records the pentagon-planned walls had 95 towers and 11 gates, and were repaired in 1102 by the Danishmendid ruler Gümüştekin Ahmet Gazi. Today the walls are in a ruined state, with sections still standing in Battalgazi.
